Leo passed Mia a post-lunch cup of coffee as he sat down beside her at the conference table.

She was still viewing the final minutes of the Felicity Tree CCTV footage sent over by Detective Danielson. Leo’d escaped the last few boring minutes only by disposing of their to-go containers and grabbing some more caffeine. “I miss anything?”

She paused the video long enough to raise one perfectly shaped eyebrow at him before turning back to the laptop.

Right. Another exciting afternoon at the Bureau.

Saying the footage was “spotty at best,” as Detective Danielson had told him earlier that day, was an understatement.

Leo sipped his coffee and stared at the screen with her. Dull as it was, they needed to at least make sure they viewed everything. Otherwise, it’d be just their luck to miss something relevant in the last few captured seconds.

So far, though, they’d gained nothing. No clear path for any of the victims. No suspicious activity or suggestion of new suspects. And no sign of Jay South’s car leaving his bar’s parking lot, because the man kept only one camera in operation, and it was aimed at the front door.

“There’s still no sighting of the victims’ cars?” Mia asked. “That’s kind of key at this point.”

Leo tapped his phone to double-check for missed messages, but only his wallpaper gazed back at him. No notifications. “Last message was from Emma, telling us they got a few names from Barb Royer but no information on her husband’s car’s whereabouts. The hunt’s still on.”

“By the sound of your voice, you don’t think we’re likely to find anything, do you?” Now that the video footage had come to a stop, Mia closed it out.

Leo frowned and ran one finger around the rim of his half-empty mug. “I don’t think it’s likely, no. Since the victims were led to a location with enough privacy to remove their heads, and since that crime scene still hasn’t been found, I’m thinking their vehicles will be as hard to find as their bodies.”

Mia pursed her lips like she wished she could disagree. Instead, she drank the last of her coffee and slammed down the cup, as if for emphasis. “You ready to tackle interviewing William Rigert’s widow? That’s next on our to-do list, right?”

“Let’s do it.” Leo finished his coffee, then grabbed his coat and bag for the ride.

In a fleet Ford Expedition, they reviewed what they knew of Rigert, the inhabitant of the third desecrated crypt.

Dead only nine months, following a sudden heart attack, Rigert had been in his early forties. No criminal background, and he’d been a longtime employee of a local foundry. Nothing suspicious or standout about the man, so far as the records suggested.

The apartment complex where he’d lived appeared as nondescript as the man himself. Leo parked in a lot with no markings to suggest where guests might park versus tenants.

They had to skirt trash as he and Mia headed toward the staircase to unit 209. He waved to a downstairs neighbor peering through her blinds, but she only scowled back at him before turning away.
